What is a dental crown?
Dental Restoration | A dental crown is a restorative procedure to protect or replace a tooth. Some examples are:
- Cover a large cavity or filling
- Replace teeth with a dental bridge or dental implant
- Protect chipped, fractured, or worn down teeth
- Restore a tooth after a root canal treatment
- Cover a discolored or misshapen tooth
Dental crowns are a cap that is placed on top of a dental implant or tooth that has been shapen for proper fitting. They are made of different materials such as metal, ceramic, porcelain, or composite resin. Except for metal, the other options are color matched to your teeth for a flawless look.
How is a dental crown applied?
If you are getting a dental crown on a tooth, we shape your tooth to fit the crown. Then a mouth impression is taken to customize your new crown. In the meantime, you will have a temporary crown. It is important avoid stick foods, gum, hot, and cold drinks. Your temporary crown can become damage and your underlying tooth may feel sensitive. Once the permanent crown is ready, it gets attached with cement. However, if the dental crown is placed over a dental implant, the process is slightly different. The dental implant needs to heal before a permanent crown is placed. When it has healed, an abutment is screwed into the implant and the crown is cemented in place.
How should I care for my dental crown?
Dental crowns require basic dental care maintenance to remove plaque and bacteria. Avoid hard food and objects. Biting down hard can damage a dental crown. Also, maintain your regular visits to our dental office for teeth cleaning and exams.
If you notice your crown has loosen or become damaged, contact us right away. The underlying tooth or dental implant can become exposed to bacteria and lead to an infection.
